A Symbol of Resilience: Bison in Winter
During the cold winter season, bison develop thick, woolly coats that help protect them from freezing temperatures and harsh winds. It is said that a bison's winter coat is so thick and provides insulation so effective that when snow accumulates on its coat, it will not melt from the heat of the bison's skin. Their skin also thickens in response to cold temperatures and fatty deposits appear to insulate the animal. This is important because during winter storms, bison will actually turn toward the storm, hunker down, and wait for it to pass. With thick coats and creating a low profile, bison can survive the same storm that would kill many domestic livestock. Bison also have the ability use their large head and massive neck and shoulder muscles as snow plows to forage in snow as deep as four feet!
They have adapted to efficiently find nourishment from low quality forage that allows them to battle blizzards, -40 degree temperatures, and 50 mph winds.
Under cold stress, bison have developed the adaptation to minimize nutritional needs and slow their metabolism to conserve energy.
They slow down their metabolisms, the amount of time they spending foraging, and the amount of food they consume in order to conserve energy. Bison also have the ability to generate internal body heat through digestion. Forage is retained longer in their gut - due to the increase of indigestible plant material found in the winter - which allows them to eat less but still receive the nutrition they require. Without these adaptations, surviving the freezing temperatures and blizzard storms would not be possible.
A muscular hump supports a massive head, a snow plow that clears away drifts and uncovers buried grasses. A dense coat and layers of fat stave off the punishing wind and cold. These beasts carry winter with them every step.

Beautifully presented. That was a great sharing .I wish you a wonderful day.
Great video! One request - can you introduce a lag before displaying the name of the birds? I am trying to find vids to use to teach my kid to identify KP birds and he thinks it is pretty funny if he can just read the answer instead of working it out for himself! The lag just needs to be long enough to pause the vid.
That is a great suggestion!! Thank you for asking and I will definitely do that.
Good boy😊
Beautiful 😍!
What a bunch of cuties! Please enjoy at a safe distance.
تحياتي من مصر ❤❤❤❤
I also bird at home in Ramona, California. I recently came across a male singing high in a tree and what I think is the female or juvenile. It was making cute sounds. I have not been able to find recording of the female vocalizing sounds specifically. They don’t sing like the male, but it’s certainly making some complex soft sounds.
0:15 this is the female mountain blue bird correct?
Yes, that is correct.
This year I had a couple of Western Tanager pairs here at my home in North West New Mexico near the Laguna Pueblo. Wow! It's what I'm hearing from everyone because I've also got Bullocks Orioles and Blue-Winged Warblers and no one has ever seen these here before, not even myself. Then I read a story online that said Western Tanager was a rare sighting. Here I see it's not so rare in your video, so I'm wondering, how rare is it in South West North America to see them?
Oh, that's a beautiful little baby. Such expressive eyes.
Very cute!
❤️❤️❤️
Loool i recently had a dream i met a talking female muskrat named Darcy, she wore a simple pink dress too
I hoped for footage of a male. Great job on filming these aerial acrobats, it's hard. I have tried but they whizz around too fast for my eyes to keep up.
Aww 🥰🥰 my favorite 🐦 bird so cute charming 💖💖
Super foxes!

Every year around the end of April there are 5-6 Turkey Vultures that return to the area and hang out in some of the bigger trees in town. They were in the tree right behind my house!! Such a thrill to watch them.

Really great footage! Many thanks - best regards, Rolf
I see them all the time in the canal near my house. Once they see me, they generally dive down under water almost in a blink!
Beautiful! <3
I have just read about them Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!👍😊
Hello Becca, there are a lot of animals and birds with endurance and resilience but when i have to pick on out i go for the Great Tit.When it has 9 chicks and it is 40 degrees they have to work very hard to feed them in bad circumstances.I also like the Bisons and the images are wonderful. Here in my nature reserve are 15 Wisents -the european version - but they are behind a thread.I can go in because i know a befriended ranger who takes me with him.Greetings Gijs
